What Should Christians Do With AI?

What should Christians do with AI?
Church unity is a BIG deal to God:
“I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.” 1 Corinthians 1:10 (NLT)
Augustine: In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.
The Big Q:
How do we steward technology in a way that honors God and benefits people?
Technological advancements in the Bible:
“So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27 (NLT)
“1Then the Lord said to Moses, 2‘Look, I have specifically chosen Bezalel ... 3I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts... 4He is a master at every craft!’” Exodus 31:1-4 (NLT)
“3They began saying to each other, ‘Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.’ (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.) 4Then they said, ‘Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.’ ... 9That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In this way He scattered them all over the world.” Genesis 11:3-4, 9 (NLT)
God is for innovation, but not innovation that is driven by pride and independence from Him.
AI = technology that uses data and algorithms to learn patterns and make decisions in ways that resemble human intelligence.
“I refuse to use AI!”
AI is a neutral tool. The morality comes from the user.
AI Concerns: Inaccuracies/hallucinations, biases, plagiarism/copyright, environmental impact/energy use, industry disruption, privacy, mental health, cognitive atrophy, NextGen dangers, abuse, scams, deepfakes, too agreeable
AI Opportunities: Productivity, cost reductions, time savings, faster access to knowledge and learning, creativity/idea generation, healthcare advances, scientific advancement, environmental/energy benefits, accessibility, automation, new opportunities/industries
AI can be a powerful and helpful Bible study assistant.
Why AI can be helpful:
- Volume
- Dynamic
- Scalable
- Conversational
- Customizable
Look to the Holy Spirit first, last and all throughout studying the Word
“And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.” 1 Corinthians 2:12 (NLT)
- Heads up:
- Use it to assist, not replace
- Give good prompts
- Be ready for errors
What does the Bible say about AI?
“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16 (NLT)
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
“16Always be joyful. 17Never stop praying. 18Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 19Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 20Do not scoff at prophecies, 21but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. 22Stay away from every kind of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 (NLT)
My perspective:
- Cautiously optimistic about AI
- Learn how to use AI
- If you use AI, do so wisely:
- Use it to assist, not replace
- Give good prompts
- Be ready for errors
The Big Q:
How do we steward AI in a way that honors God and benefits people?
“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NLT)
Our God-given purpose:
Matthew 22:37-40, 28:18-20
The Bayou Church exists to invite every single person in Acadiana to Know God, Find Community, and Make a Difference.
Craig Groeschel: We’ll do anything short of sin to reach people who don’t know Christ.
