The Holy Spirit Dwells

Acts 2 - The Arrival of the Holy Spirit
“6So when they had come together, they asked Him, ‘Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?’ 7He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by His own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’” Acts 1:6-8 (CSB)
“1When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. 3They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them. 4Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:1-4 (CSB)
The Holy Spirit is Jesus continued …
“They are to make a sanctuary for me so that I may dwell among them.” Exodus 25:8 (CSB)
Garden → God walked with people (Genesis 3:8) Tabernacle → God dwelled among people (Exodus 25:8; Exodus 40:34-35)
Temple → God localized His presence (1 Kings 8:10-11; 2 Chronicles 7:1-2)
Jesus → God became flesh (John 1:14)
Pentecost → God moved inside His people (Acts 2:1-4; 1 Corinthians 3:16)
Three Ways the Holy Spirit Dwells:
Presence → Proximity → Possession
#1 - Presence — The Holy Spirit moves in you.
A lot of people still think God lives in buildings.
The Bible says God dwells in believers.
“16And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn’t see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17 (CSB)
“And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you.” Romans 8:11 (CSB)
“16Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s temple and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and that is what you are.” 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (CSB)
You are the temple.
“I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking Him in His temple.” Psalm 27:4 (CSB)
The Holy Spirit is not an experience to be felt. He is a Presence to be delighted in and to be surrendered to.
#2 - Proximity – The Holy Spirit goes with you.
“16And what agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God, as God said: I will dwell and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. 17Therefore, come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord; do not touch any unclean thing, and I will welcome you. 18And I will be a Father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:16-18 (CSB)
Every step you take is holy ground when God walks with you.
“And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by Him for the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30 (CSB)
“Don’t stifle the Spirit.” 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (CSB)
#3 - Possession – The Holy Spirit claims you.
“The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession (peripoíēsis), to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:14 (CSB)
“9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession (peripoíēsis), so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:9-10 (CSB)
The Holy Spirit is not a spiritual accessory, He is your spiritual authority.
In Christ, you already have all of the Holy Spirit. Does the Holy Spirit have ALL of you?
