Are Angels and Demons Real?

Are angels and demons real?

There is an unseen spiritual realm.

15Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16for through Him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through Him and for Him.” Colossians 1:15-16 (NLT)

Are angels and demons real? Absolutely!

Angels

  • Angels exist.

“In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.” Luke 15:10 (NLT)

“Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.” Matthew 4:11 (NLT)

  • The Bible does not teach that we become angels in heaven.

  • The role of angels:

“Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.” Hebrews 1:14 (NLT)

“My God sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths so that they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in His sight.” Daniel 6:22 (NLT)

Angels are created spiritual beings who serve God by carrying out His will and caring for His people.

  • Angels aren’t the focus. Jesus is!

8I, John, am the one who heard and saw all these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me. 9But he said, ‘No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers the prophets, as well as all who obey what is written in this book. Worship only God!’” Revelation 22:8-9 (NLT)

Demons

  • Demons are rebellious fallen angels.

“For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment.” 2 Peter 2:4 (NLT)

  • They’re organized and strategic and want to destroy you.

“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 (NLT)

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)

Satan’s 5 Ds:

  • Deceive
  • Distract
  • Divide
  • Discourage
  • Destroy
  • Demons are infinitely inferior to God and ultimately defeated.

“ … He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross.” Colossians 2:15 (NLT)

What if some of the things you’re dealing with aren’t just physical or relational or emotional ... but spiritual?!

You can’t win a battle you don’t know you’re in.

3We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.”
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 (NLT)

Primary Playbook: Ephesians 6

  • Armor of God

“Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11 (NLT)

  • Prayer

“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” Ephesians 6:18 (NLT)

You’re not fighting this battle alone! God has given you everything you need:

  • His angels
  • His armor & prayer
  • His Son
  • His Spirit

“But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.” 1 John 4:4 (NLT)

The ultimate answer: Jesus

13You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for He forgave all our sins. 14He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15In this way, He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross.” Colossians 2:13-15 (NLT)

You don’t defeat darkness by your strength.

You defeat darkness by surrendering your life to Jesus.
