Why is there so much chaos in the home?

Satan knows: if he can destabilize the home, he can destabilize the entire culture.

God prophecies a sign:

“His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.” Malachi 4:6 (NLT)

“He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly.” Luke 1:17 (NLT)

At the close of the OT and opening of the NT God points to reconciliation between fathers and children as evidence of His restoration.

Satan has a strategy to destroy the home. God designed an authority structure to strengthen it.

“²²For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. ²³For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of His body, the church. ²⁴As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.” Ephesians 5:22-24 (NLT)

• Remember:
  • Submission ≠ inferior, weak, losing
  • Submission = humility, trust, strength
• Wives: Submission means willingly honoring, supporting, and following your husband’s God-given leadership.
• Wives: Refusing to submit tears down your husband and dishonors God.
• Wives: Willing submission builds up your husband and honors the Lord.
• Difficult husband:
  • Abusive?
  • Unfaithful?
  • Outright defying God?
  • Disagreements or different preferences?

“²⁵For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up His life for her ²⁶to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. ²⁷He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. ²⁸In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. ²⁹No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. ³⁰And we are members of His body.” Ephesians 5:25-30 (NLT)

• Remember:
  • Authority ≠ control, abuse, corruption
  • Authority = responsibility, stewardship, service
• Husbands: Leading means loving, serving, and laying down your life for your wife.
• Husbands: Refusing to love and lead sacrificially burdens your wife and dishonors God.
• Husbands: Sacrificial leadership builds up your wife and honors the Lord.
• Difficult wife:
  • Abusive?
  • Unfaithful?
  • Outright defiant?
  • Disagreements or different preferences?

“³¹As the Scriptures say, ‘A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ ³²This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.” Ephesians 5:31-32 (NLT)

“³The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs. ⁴The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. ⁵Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 (NLT)

“So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” Ephesians 5:33 (NLT)

• Look in the mirror first.
  • Triple dog dare: Ask your spouse how you’re doing and listen.
• Is your marriage in crisis? Seek professional counseling.

“¹Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. ²‘Honor your father and mother.’ This is the first commandment with a promise: ³If you honor your father and mother, ‘things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.’” Ephesians 6:1-3 (NLT)

• Sons & Daughters in the Home: Obedience means listening to, honoring, and following your parents’ God-given leadership.
• Sons & Daughters in the Home: Disobedience and dishonor hurts your parents and God.
• Sons & Daughters in the Home: Obedience and honor strengthen your family and honor the Lord.
• Difficult parent:
  • Imperfect?
  • Disagree or don’t understand?
  • They tell you to sin?
  • Abusive?
• Sons and Daughters out of the Home: Obedience has a season. Honor lasts a lifetime.
• Needlessly cutting off your parents breaks their hearts and God’s.

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 (NLT)

• Parents, you are authorized to lead. So lead!

God’s Design for Authority in the Home:

• Husband sacrificially leads
• Wife willingly submits
• Children honor and obey
