“21Again He said, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.’ 22Then He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’ … ” John 20:21-22 (NLT)
- The Spirit sends us! (Part 6)
Dangerous Christian thinking: God saved me just for me.
Rick Warren: “IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU. The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. ... You were born by His purpose and for His purpose.”
We have the greatest news in human history! The Holy Spirit sends us out into the world to share it.
“17This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 18And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to Him. 19For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And He gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 20So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making His appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, ‘Come back to God!’ 21For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.” 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 (NLT)
The Holy Spirit is actively bringing people from death to life and He is compelling you and I to join Him!
Are you living on mission or for something else?
But....
I’m not capable.
“But you will receive power (dýnamis) when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NLT)
I’m scared.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
We’re more worried about what people think about us than whether or not they’re going to hell.
I don’t know what to say.
He promises to give you the words.
“11And when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how to defend yourself or what to say, 12for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said.” Luke 12:11-12 (NLT)
Just share what God did in your life!
“I don’t know whether he is a sinner,” the man replied. “But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!” John 9:25 (NLT)
You don't have to be impressive or witty or convincing. You just have to be filled with the Spirit and be obedient.
“22And now I am bound by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem. I don’t know what awaits me, 23except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead. 24But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” Acts 20:22-24 (NLT)
Why is this such a big deal? Because heaven and hell are real and eternity is a long time.
This is God’s mission. This is our church’s mission. Is it yours?
“18Jesus came and told His disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:18-20 (NLT)
